Laser doppler flowmetry (LDF) is a new non-invasive technique by which microcirculation changes in tissue can be studied. In recent papers, this technique has been used to measure microflow in standardized fluid models, in animals and in human clinical situations.

Blood perfusion (blood flow) is estimated by illuminating a tissue sample with single-frequency light and processing the frequency distribution of the backscattered light. Laser Doppler flowmetry is an optical measuring method that enables the number and velocity of particles conveyed by a fluid flow to be measured. The particles (1–20 μm) must be big enough to scatter sufficient light for signal detection but small enough to follow the flow faithfully ( Durst et al. 1976 , Durrani & Greated 1977 , Drain 1980 , Bonner & Nossal 1990 , Albrecht et al. 2003 ).

Laser Doppler flowmetry (LDF) is a noninvasive, continuous measure of tissue surface microcirculatory red blood cell (RBC) flux. LDF was calibrated against varying RBC volume fractions and flow rates using extracorporeal perfusion of saphenous island flaps of dogs. The RBC flux was found to be linear with LDF signal. The LaserFlow remotely measures flow in open channels with non-contact Laser Doppler Velocity technology and non-contact Ultrasonic Level technology. The sensor uses advanced technology to measure velocity with a laser beam at single or multiple points below the surface of the wastewater stream.

42. Baab DA, Oberg PA. Laser Doppler measurement of gingival blood flow in dogs with increasing and decreasing inflammation. Abstract: An instrument for measurement of tissue blood flow based on the laser Doppler principle was evaluated using a fluid model. A unique and linear relationship between flowmeter response and flux of red cells was demonstrated with red cell velocities and volume fractions within the normal physiological range of the microcirculatory network of the skin. The sensor then focuses its laser beam at this point and measures the frequency shift of the returned light. The LaserFlow is ideal for a broad range of wastewater monitoring applications.
